I would be curious to what degree the amount of face-to-face interaction decreased from the time that television was introduced, and radio, for that matter. I suspect that the drops were more significant with the introduction of TV. Although people are spending more time on-line, it doesn't follow that all that time "wasted" would have been spent interacting face to face. I suspect that much of that time would have been spent watching TV. Also, I wonder if the overall interaction among people (face-to-face + virtual) is increasing, and what impact does that have?

This is an interesting study. For their face book study I think a better criteria for happiness would be to analyze the user's posts than to use smiles in the profile pic.

This is an interesting metaphor, though there are some complications. For example, security remains a big issue on the web, which would seem to relate to the safety level, in that many people still struggle with perceptions of insecurity and lack of privacy on the web - seems like this relates to a more fundamental level of Maslow's hierarchy.

In looking over the descriptions of these studies, they definitely don't appear to all support the idea that internet use makes you sad. It appears some do and some don't, and some aren't realted - the relationship between internet use and happiness is, not surprisingly, moderated by other things.
